solving difficult problems in mathematical analysis on the real axis. The volume is intended as a challenge to involve students as active participants in the course. To make our work self-contained, all chapters include basic definitions and properties. The problems are clustered by topic into eight chapters, each of them containingFile Size: 4MB.   By “analysis” they mean what was in the mainstream of analysis in , that is, mostly theory of functions of a single complex variable. They do include many related matters, such as sequences, Riemann integrals, asymptotics, and more, but they omit more modern analysis topics such as functional analysis, linear spaces, and measure theory.

About this book This first volume is a one semester course in basic analysis. Together with the second volume it is a year-long course. It started its life as my lecture notes for teaching Math at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in Fall semester Later I added the metric space chapter. This book, like its two predecessors, is a wonderful source of interesting and challenging problems. As a resource, it is unequaled. It offers a much richer selection than is found in any current textbook. Moreover, the book includes a complete set of solutions. This is the third volume of Problems in Mathematical Analysis.

In the past, more of the leading mathematicians proposed and solved problems than today, and there were problem departments in many journals. Pólya and Szego must have combed all of the large problem literature from about to for their material, and their collection of the best in analysis is a heritage of lasting value.

From the reviews: "The work is one of the real classics of this century; it has had much influence on teaching, on research in several branches of hard analysis, particularly complex function theory, and it has been an essential indispensable source book for those seriously interested in mathematical problems.

From reviews for Volumes I and II: A valuable resource American Mathematical Monthly Would be an ideal choice for tutorial or problem-solving seminars.

The volume is also suitable for self-study presentation of material is designed to help student comprehension and to encourage them to ask their own questions and to start research a really useful book for.

Another contender for "best collection ever" is the famed two-volume work Problems and theorems in analysis by Pólya-Szegő. That justly celebrated work contains, despite the title, much algebra and was at the research level, many exercises being extracted from papers published in prestigious journals.

The last part of the volume deals with the Lebesgue-Stieljes integral. Supplementing the book, Theorems and Problems in Functional Analysis, these volumes may be used by graduate students taking a course in functional analysis.

In order to understand this text, the reader must be familiar with mathematical analysis and real analysis. Problems and Theorems in Analysis I: Series, Integral Calculus, Theory of Functions.
